Joseph Choï Korean, b. 1968

b. 1968, South Korea, lives and works in Paris

The first impression of Choi’s paintings is often surreal or dreamlike. However, rather than depicting fantasy, they feature real-looking figures, objects, and spaces arranged in a way that does not exist in reality. Every painting includes at least one figure—sometimes alone, sometimes in pairs, or occasionally in larger groups. While their identities remain ambiguous, similar facial features appear repeatedly. Most of his figures are set against interior spaces. Depending on the number of figures, the spatial background, and the emphasis on certain aspects of the figures, his works can be categorized into distinct series.
