Joseph Choï Korean, b. 1968

"I record. For me, painting is a language. The images of my days, the memories accumulated over months and years, the events unfolding in the present, and even the erased images that resurface—I paint them as if writing a diary. Fleeting scenes, mundane moments, deeply ingrained memories…"

Choi pulls images from various sources into his initial creative space—a state of mental weightlessness—where he processes, interprets, and reshapes them into his own unique forms. His work progresses through a distinct process: first, he collects images, then simplifies them into monochrome sketches. These sketches are refined into delicate drawings or transferred onto small canvases, where he adds pastel colors. This is the stage where he develops color harmonies and refines the composition. The unique color sensibility of his finished oil paintings originates from this step. Choi’s use of color does not follow any particular theory or logic; instead, it serves as an immediate and intuitive means of emotional expression. The small pastel works are then translated onto larger canvases and reinterpreted in oil paint.
